US Luxury Retailer Nordstrom launching massive recruiting campaign

While retailers of all types have put out help wanted signs in response to the nation’s labor shortage, Nordstrom needs to be adequately staffed to maintain its reputation for superior service and as a gift-giving destination during the holiday season.

“The holidays are the busiest time of year, and we need your help to make this season merry,” Nordstrom said in a statement Tuesday. This year’s hiring drive is more ambitious than last year’s, when the goal was to hire 22,000 new employees across Nordstrom fulfillment and distribution centers, as well as Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores.

Other major retailers are also hiring in large numbers to help them manage the holiday season and the increased demand for goods that has been seen all year. Last month, Kohl’s Corp. announced plans to hire approximately 90,000 seasonal associates this year, including staff for the retailer’s new e-commerce fulfillment center in Etna, Ohio, and beauty advisers for the Sephora shops in 200 Kohl’s stores.

Macy’s Inc. announced plans to hire approximately 76,000 full- and part-time employees for its Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Bluemercury stores, call centers, and distribution and fulfillment centers. About 48,000 of these positions would be seasonal, with the remainder being permanent opportunities to join Macy’s Inc. on a part- or full-time basis for the holidays and beyond.

Nordstrom stated that it provides competitive pay, a 20% merchandise discount, an employee charitable match, and a volunteer program. Medical coverage, an employer-matched retirement plan, and other benefits are also available to eligible employees.

Among the incentives to apply, the company stated that hourly and overnight employees at Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores will receive “premium pay,” and that new employees are eligible for up to $650 in incentive pay. In addition, Nordstrom is providing premium pay to supply chain employees, and new employees are eligible for up to $2,500 in incentives.

The company also stated that “many of our seasonal hires converted to regular roles after the holiday 2020 season.” We also want this to be more than just a seasonal job; we want each hire to gain valuable experience that will last long after the holidays are over. We are providing several incentives for new employees this holiday season.”
